This Kit includes 3 different plays:

  • Louis la grenouille
This is story about a cool rock-and-roll loving, guitar-playing frog named Louis, who finds that life is very lonely in his pond. Although he loves to sing and play music, he realizes that something is missing. One day, he finds a lamp floating in his pond. He picks it up, rubs it, and a genie appears. The genie asks Louis if he has a wish he would like granted and Louis says that he wants to find a girlfriend who likes his music. The genie tells Louis to go for a walk in the forest because that is where he will find someone special. The genie disappears and Louis sets off for the forest. Right away, Louis meets a girl, a ballerina who loves to dance to music. Louis is happy to meet her and offers to sing a song for her. She accepts reluctantly, and Louis plays his hit song Le boogie des grenouilles. The ballerina tries to dance to Louis’ rock music but cannot and leaves in a huff. The next person that Louis meets is an opera singer. She sings very loudly and loves her classical music, but when Louis asks if she wants to hear him play his electric guitar, she will have nothing to do with him. Finally, Louis sees a girl frog who is listening to music on her CD walkman. He interrupts to greet her and she tells him that she loves rock music. Louis offers to play his song Le boogie des grenouilles for her and she is very excited to hear him sing and play. The girl frog loves his music and tells him that he’s great! Louis thanks the genie for helping him to find a friend and the two frogs, sharing a bag of insects, together hop back to Louis’ pond where they immediately fall in love. This story is the unit four play for the second kit of the Histoires en action! program. It is a very popular play with teachers and students from early elementary levels right up to grade eight. It is full of emotional content, contains humour, and results in a happy ending. Students meet Louis la grenouille, a popular character who returns in future plays and songs. This play has inspired many creative story extensions by the students who have experienced it. This play is slightly more challenging to learn than the level two plays as it has fewer repeated segments.

  • Chat Angora
This is a story about a very goofy, not-too-bright, absent-minded detective. The story takes place in a deserted alley, behind some restaurants in the city. There are garbage cans in the alley and a large bag of rice with the word RIZ printed clearly on the front so that the audience can see the word. The story begins with a television reporter (who takes on the role of narrator) stating that the detective, Chat Angora, is in search of the criminal, Madame Rat. Chat Angora receives three different clues from three very different, mysterious characters, each with a very distinct personality. Charlie le chien is a no-nonsense character who takes his mission very seriously. He discreetly hands Chat Angora a card in the shape of a letter ‘R’. Chat Angora has no idea what to do with the letter and fusses over where to put it. Next, Wanda l’oiseau, a very beautiful, mysterious bird, enters and Chat Angora continues to fuss over the letter. She helps him get focused by telling him to put it on the wall so that he can see it. She then hands him a card in the shape of the letter ‘I’. Chat Angora tries to make sense of the clue, but can’t figure it out. Next, a very mysterious, unidentified character rushes onto the scene, knocking over Chat Angora, and then drops a third and final clue, the letter ‘Z’. Chat Angora is very upset by this individual’s actions, until he finds the clue on his lap and, once again, tries to make sense of the three letters he has received. He still has not deciphered the clues and a very frustrated Madame Rat jumps out of the bag of rice and shows him what the clues stand for. She tells him that ‘R’ ‘I’ ‘Z’ spells RIZ and that she is hiding in the bag of rice. Chat Angora is thrilled and very proud that he now knows where she is and says that he is now going to take her to jail. Madame Rat is too smart for Chat Angora, however, and tricks him into getting her something to eat and drink before he takes her away. Chat Angora stupidly leaves to get the food and Madame Rat makes her escape. When Chat Angora returns, Madame Rat is, of course, no longer there and Chat Angora is very disappointed. He vows to continue to look for her, and find her again one day. Chat Angora then shares his food with the television reporter. This story is the unit five play for the second kit of the Histoires en action! program. It is a very popular play with teachers and students from late elementary levels right up to grade eight. It is full of emotional content and humour, and results in an unresolved ending, which is ideal for story extension possibilities! Students love the contrasting personalities of the characters, and especially love to be the goofy Chat Angora. This play is slightly more challenging to learn than the level three plays as it has very little repetition and is longer. It does, however, maintain the familiar format of narrator (l’animatrice de télévision), main character (Chat Angora) and three supporting roles (Charlie le chien, Wanda l’oiseau, Madame Rat). One additional character, Monsieur mystérieux, can be played by any of the characters (except Chat Angora) as there are no lines. This role simply involves putting on a big hat, sunglasses, and a long trench coat over another costume, running across the stage, bumping into Chat Angora and dropping the final clue in his lap.

  • Le bistro des animaux
This is a story about three different animals, a lion, an elephant, and a mouse who, at the beginning of the story, are very proud of their own talents and dislike each other because of their differences. Louis la grenouille reappears in this story. He watches the animals and tries to find a solution to their arguments. He visits his friend, Alice l’Alligator in the bayou, who suggests that they try to get the animals to work together on a common project that they will all be able to enjoy. She suggests that they have the animals build a café. Louis and Alice visit each animal in turn, suggesting that each one help with the building. Each one agrees to help and in the last scene they are all working together on the building although each one does not know that the others are involved until they complete the project. At first they are upset but as each animal explains his/her contribution, they realize how important it is to appreciate rather than dislike one another for their differences. Louis and Alice join the group at the end as they help name the café, and finally all the animals look forward to enjoying it together! This is a popular play with teachers and students at the mid to late elementary levels. It is full of emotional content, contains humour, and results in a happy ending. Students revisit Louis la grenouille, a popular character who appeared in the unit four play and song. The moral of the story states that although we are all different, each of us has something special to offer. This play is more challenging to learn as it has very little repetition and is slightly longer than the previous plays.
